November 1 - 25, 2022

BDAR Second Annual 'A Night of Shelter' virtual fundraiser ran from November 1st to 25th raising funds for the Busby Centre, Youth Haven, and the Lighthouse.

As we continue to see a lack of safe and affordable housing, the Night of Shelter Fundraiser provides a chance to highlight these important issues happening within our communities and the amazing works of these local agencies.

2022 Highlights

The average night of shelter in our region costs approximately $30 and BDAR's initial goal this year was to raise 730 nights of shelter for a total of $22,000. We are so happy to announce that we not only reached out goal but surpassed it once again this year raising 760 nights of shelter totaling $22,800.

We want to thank our members and the greater community for all their support and generosity once again this year!

The David Busby Centre has been operational since 1993 and is a community not-for-profit organization working from a non-judgmental approach to advocate for and improve conditions for individuals and families within the County of Simcoe who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.

David Busby Centre offers a variety of services from shelter, food, outreach, warming/cooling center, housing supporting services and so much more.

The Lighthouse has been serving Orillia's homeless and vulnerable since 1992. With support from their partners, they help those who are experiencing homelessness find housing and stay housed through their various stages of need; emergency, supportive, and affordable housing.

The Lighthouse is committed to being a part of the whole journey to individual success and believes it is possible to create a thriving community where everyone has hope, a home, and a future. In additon to shelter, staff also provide relief, support, and development including addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Youth Haven provides youth experiencing homelessness and at-risk youth between the ages of 16-24 with the love, support, guidance, programs, and life skills needed to foster their sense of well-being and security.

As Simcoe County’s only emergency shelter for youth experiencing homelessness, Youth Haven also provides outreach services and programs to at-risk youth in Barrie, Orillia, Midland, Southern Georgian Bay, and South Simcoe.

Looking Ahead to 2023

We are looking forward to continuing to run this fundraiser annually to help provide and encourage a brighter future for those seeking shelter and to support the long-term programs of these local organizations.

With the increasing lack of affordable housing and resources, the 'Night of Shelter' fundraiser provides a chance to highlight these important issues happening within our communities and how these local organizations help those experiencing homelessness create a brighter future for themselves through various support programs, and attaining employment and housing. With each year that we run this fundraiser, we look to forward increasing engagement and continuing to grow this fundraiser year after year.
